McChrystal: troops pave way for revamped Afghan strategy
U.S. President Barack Obama's pledge of 30,000 troops for Afghanistan provides the manpower for a revamped strategy to protect civilians, ramp up training of local forces and turn the war's tide, his commander said on Wednesday.

Pakistan holding retired officer in US terror case
Pakistan's army has confirmed security agencies are questioning a retired major in connection with a U.S. terror investigation. Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas did not say when the arrest was made or reveal the identity of the man. Intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, first revealed the arrest last week.


Iraq's Basra lifts ban on booze
Officials in the southern province of Basra say they are lifting a four-month-old ban on alcohol. The spokesman for the Basra provincial council, Hashim Aleibi, says the decision Tuesday came after opponents argued the ban violated rights for personal freedoms and denied non-Muslims the ability to buy and consume liquor.


Iraq's civilian death toll in November is lowest since war began
Fewer Iraqi civilians were killed in November as a result of war-related violence than in any other month since the U.S.-led invasion began nearly seven years ago, a CNN count of Iraqi government figures shows.
